How The Internet Changed Poker
Saturday, July 17th, 2010
Poker is undoubtedly one of the world’s most popular card games. It’s known worldwide for requiring an element of skill, some good luck and the ability to bluff your opponents and is also responsible for such phrases as ‘poker face.’ There is some dispute in regard to the history of the game though. However, the German game of ‘Pochspiel’ is thought to be the earliest variant of the card game, incorporating betting, the ranking of card hands and even some bluffing. This was a game that was played in Germany way back in the 15th century.
Let’s head back into the 21st Centruy however, and the game of poker has been completely revolutionised by the Internet. Yes, the Internet has changed the way we do pretty much everything. From shopping, to banking, working and even socialising, the Internet is very much a part of our life. Poker has not missed out on the technical revolution either, with the game now proving an incredibly popular online activity. But just how has the Internet changed Poker?
Well, the most notable change is the way we actually play. We don’t have to go to a bar anymore or join a group of people at the home of a friend. In fact, we can now play with other poker players from every corner of the world from the comfort of your own home. You can take part in worldwide tournaments, playing against literally thousands of other people without leaving your computer and yes, you can actually win money too.
If we analyse how game play has changed, however, we really cannot fail to mention the fact that the ‘poker face’ element of the traditional game is somewhat gone, your digital opponents instead relying on reading your betting habits to decide if you are bluffing.
It isn’t only the actual way we play poker that has changed by the digital revolution, though. The way people learn how to play has also been changed. There are literally countless sites and resources online where people can go to research strategy. This encourages more players to actually do their research, thus playing often in a more ‘scientific’ way. Overall, of course, the Internet has helped to increase the access to this incredible game, thus continuing to make it more and more popular.
